website budgetWhile we’d all love to simply pay someone to make a slick, professional website for us, that isn’t always an option when you’re starting a work from home venture. If you decide to save money and create your own website, there are a few important things you should remember.

First and foremost, consider the readability factor. Make your site as easy on the eyes as possible, you don’t want to discourage people from reading what you have to offer! Use a simple, clear, font and make sure that the print is large enough for the average person to read comfortably. Avoid underlining (which is associated with hyperlinks), italics (which are hard on the eyes), and use bold font only on things you really want to emphasize. Keep the layout nice and simple, don’t over complicate! You want it to be as easy as possible for visitors to access everything your site has to offer without getting bogged down in a mass of flashy extras. Be very careful about what colors you decide to use. In general, you should decide on a color scheme of no more than three complimentary colors that you intend to use. You may even want to do some research on color psychology and see what emotions are evoked by different colors. By the same token, you want to make sure you use graphics appropriately. Graphics are great for creating visual interest and conveying ideas, but using too many can make your website seem crowded and may even cause it to load slowly. It’s also imperative that you keep the most important information on your website “above the fold”. What that means is that your visitors shouldn’t have to scroll down to access the most important information you have to offer, so lead with your best foot forward!

There is a wealth of information about creating a great website online with easy to follow tips, tricks, and tutorials.
