Combating Loneliness When You Work From Home
Although working from home is a dream for many people, it can also be a very lonely lifestyle. Because people who work from home often have no need to leave the house, they can begin to feel very isolated and alone. It’s important for people who work from home to take steps to avoid this feeling of isolation and bring balance to their life. Even if you have children at home with you, social interaction with other adults can provide a welcome relief.
One option is to seek out other people who work from home in your area and form a social group. Go out for lunch once a week, or arrange a weekly playdate if you all have children. This will get you out of the house and engaging in the simple social interactions that all humans crave. Another option is to relocate yourself to a more public work space once a week and take your laptop to the local coffee shop or library. Never underestimate the effect of physical proximity to large amounts of people. Just being near others can make you feel more connected to the world outside your own personal bubble.
Whether it’s volunteering, visiting the dog park, or talking to other parents in the schoolyard, getting out of the house and interacting with other adults works wonders on feelings of loneliness. Don’t let your home office become a prison, make time to socialize and do something fun every week that is completely independent from your home business.
